Burgess Park. The friends and family of South East London are gathered on a tarmac-melting Saturday. Pick-up football games are being played next to family barbecues. New couples stroll past old friends smoking and playing chess. Striding through it all, his kingdom, is Olamide (20s, Nigerian). We follow him as he stops to cheekily take a cob of corn from a barbecue, kick back footballs and greet acquaintances like long-lost siblings.
Lingering in the background is The Aylesbury estate, a large crane towering behind it with a blinding digital sign on the side: “Greenwall: Opt in now for your 360 renewal package!”
CUT TO: INT. COLDHARBOUR BARBERS
Ola getting a shape up at the barbers. The room, filled with men of all ages, bursts into laughter at a story being told by Ola’s barber, KOJO (40s, Ghanaian). He shows Ola himself in the mirror.
KOJO
So. What do you think?
OLA
Not bad.
KOJO
Not bad?!
OLA
I’m just glad you didn’t take 2 inches off my hairline this time. I was getting rinsed by 15 year olds!
KOJO
Young man, I’ve been cutting your hair for nearly 15 years and not once-
OLA
I’m joking, I’m joking. Perfect as always. Thanks Uncle.
Kojo puts his hands on Ola's shoulders warmly, then leans in with a devilish smile.
KOJO
You’re gonna look sharp for that pretty white girl tonight.
OLA
Who told you about that?
KOJO
Who you think gives your dad that nice shape-up? Fathers like to keep each other updated.
OLA
Takes a village to raise a child yeah?
KOJO
Two villages for you!
